Symposium of experts to discuss on “How to approach the problem of patient competence”. (May 26, 2006)
Introduction:
The purpose of this seminar is to begin to analyze the problem of effectively evaluating a patient's will. Respecting the wishes of the patient can raise questions as to their ability to make good decisions, especially when a patient’s refusal of a recommended treatment could result in a risk to their health or when a patient requests a treatment which has very little guarantee of success, in other words, when the arguments of the patient are not sufficiently consistent with the patient’s own interests.
Directed to clinical professionals who face the questions if a patient, although legally able, is indeed able to make lucid decisions in a particular situation.
