The Board of Trustees

The principal governing body of the Foundation is responsible for representing, governing and administering the Foundation. One of its main functions is to represent the Foundation in events and contracts, and to draw up its program of events. It is comprised of members who are recognized for their achievements in different areas of study and research in bioethics:

Her professional career included a period as a member of the Audiovisual Council of Catalonia from 2002 to 2008, and she was chairperson of the Commission for Television Content from 1993 to 1996, a period during which she was an independent senator for the socialist party of Catalonia and Spain, the PSC-PSOE.

Victòria Camps has published several books on ethics, political philosophy and bioethics, including Virtudes públicas [Public virtues] (Espasa Non-fiction Prize), Una vida de calidad [A quality life], La voluntad de vivir [The will to live], Creer en la educación [Believing in education]. Her most recent publications are: El gobierno de las emociones [Governing the emotions] (National Non-fiction Prize) and Breve historia de la ética [A short history of ethics].

Victòria Camps' professional achievements have been recognized by the Josep Mª Lladó Prize for Freedom of Expression, in 1999; the Prize for Achievement in Education, awarded by the Regional Government of Andalucia, in 1999; and the Menéndez Pelayo International Prize, received in 2008. She was made Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Huelva in 2014.

From 1991 to 2008, Broggi was head of the General Surgery Service of the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital in Badalona (Barcelona). He has also been Senior Lecturer at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and has lectured on bioethics on several Master courses.

 

Within the world of bioethics, he has been a member of the Professional Ethics Commission of the Medical Association of Barcelona, and is currently President of the Catalan Society for Bioethics.

 

He has written several articles and given various lectures on bioethics, specializing in the doctor–patient relationship, clinical information, informed consent and living wills.

After graduating in medicine from the University of Barcelona, Manuel Canivell spent most of his career with the Grifols group, which specializes in the health-pharmaceuticals sector.

He was responsible for the plasma fractionation area of Laboratorios Grifols from 1974 to 1978, head of the plasma control laboratory (1978 to 1987), and held the position of Scientific Director from 1987 until his retirement in 2007.

Throughout his career he has taught on doctoral courses on industrial plasma fractionation at the University of Barcelona, and he has contributed to courses and seminars on the pharmaceuticals industry and the manufacture of plasma products.

Neal Ball is a founder and honorary president of the American Refugee Committee, a body that provides medical aid, assistance and training to people who have become refugees as a result of war or displacement in Asia, Africa, eastern Europe and the Middle East.

He is also a member of the Board of Directors of National Medical Fellowships (New York) and is Chairman of the Honorary Committee of the International Visitors Center (Chicago). He is Vice-President of the Committee for Amerindian Art of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Montserrat Busquets is a lecturer at the School of Nursing at the University of Barcelona. During her career she has worked as a nurse at the Ciutat Sanitària Vall d'Hebron and as a lecturer at the Prínceps d'Espanya University School of Nursing, the Catalan Health Institute, and the UNED.

She has worked on various books and publications on nursing, of which the best known are Ética y legislación [Ethics and legislation], Bioética y enfermería [Bioethics and nursing] and Ética y legislación en preguntas y respuestas en enfermería [Ethics and legislation in questions and answers in nursing].

Another aspect of her career has been her work with a range of different bodies in the field of ethics in the health sector. She is a member of the Ethics Committee of the College of Nurses of Catalonia, the Bioethics Committee of Catalonia, and the Association for Bioethics and Law of the Bioethics Observatory of the University of Barcelona.

Xavier Carné is a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and a specialist in Clinical Pharmacology. Since 2003 he has worked as Head of Clinical Pharmacology at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona. He has also been a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology at the University of Barcelona since 2007.

He advises a number of organizations, and is active in research. He is a member of the Pharmacotherapy Committee for outpatient dispensing of hospital drugs at Catsalut, member of the Bioethics Committee of Catalonia, member of the National Committee on Clinical Pharmacology of the Spanish Ministry of Health, and President of the Capacity Building Working Group at ECRIN.

During his professional career, he has delivered more than 130 lectures at congresses, and he has published more than 80 original articles and reviews in indexed medical journals and more than 40 articles in books or chapters of books.

Rafael Dal-Re

Rafael Dal-Ré holds a Ph.D. in Medicine from the Complutense University, and a Master in Public Health from the Autonomous University of Madrid.

He has worked primarily in the pharmaceutical industry, and for over 20 years has worked as Medical Department Director for various multinational companies. For over a decade (1998–2010) he was a Fellow of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine of The Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom.

Between 1993 and 1996 he was a member of the National Pharmacovigilance Commission (Spanish Department of Health). He is the author of over 140 articles published in both Spanish and international journals, over twenty of which relate to different aspects of bioethics in clinical research.

Pere Ibern is research fellow of the Center for Research on Health and Economics, at Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, as well as Strategic Development Director at DKV Seguros, a health insurance company. He has been Professor in the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics and in the Department of Economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, where he teached courses in health economics, economics of organization and business strategy.

 

He obtained his M.B.A. at ESADE (Escuela Superior de Administración de Empresas, Barcelona) and his Ph.D. in Management Science at Universitat Ramon Llull. He also completed the Executive Program on Health Care Administration at Yale University.

 

Later, he was visiting researcher at Duke University Center for Demographic Studies, and has been consultant for the World Bank and Interamerican Development Bank. He has been President of Spanish Health Economics Association and member of the board of the Spanish Public Health Association.

Josep Maria Lozano holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy and Education Sciences, and a degree in Theology, Philosophy and the Arts. Since 1986 he has been a lecturer at the Department of Social Sciences, ESADE.

He is a founder of the Institute for the Person, Business and Society (IPES), and works with a number of bodies and publications in the field of business ethics. These include the Society for Business Ethics, the journal Responsabilidad Social de la Empresa, and the European Business Ethics Network.

Specializing in business ethics and social responsibility, he has published widely in this field, including Persona, empresa y sociedad [The person, business and society] and Guía práctica de Derechos Humanos para empresas [Practical guide to human rights for businesses].

Specializing in Legal Philosophy, Francesca Puigpelat's career has been divided between teaching and research. Since 1991 she has been a professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), where she was Dean of the Faculty of Law from 2002 to 2008.

 

She works with a number of institutions and bodies in the field of bioethics. She is a member of the Advisory Committee on Bioethics of Catalonia, of the Bioethics, Law and Society Group, and of the Bioethics Observatory of the University of Barcelona.

Begoña Román

Begoña Román Maestre holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Barcelona, and is currently a lecturer in the Department of Theoretical and Practical Philosophy in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Barcelona.

Between 1996 and 2007 she held the Chair in Ethics at the Ramon Llull University. She is a member of the well-established research group funded by the Government of Catalonia, "Aporia: Contemporary Philosophy, ethics and politics".

Her area of expertise is applied ethics, which she teaches in several masters and postgraduate programs.

She is the Chair of the Catalan Social Services Ethics Committee, and is a member of the Bioethics Committee of Catalonia and of the primary healthcare ethics committee of the Catalan Health Institute, and is a member of the clinical ethics committees at the Hospital Clinic (Barcelona) and at the Hospital San Rafael (Madrid).

A specialist in scientific journalism since 1982, Vladimir de Semir combines his work with a number of media organizations with teaching and research in the field of scientific communication. He has been director of the Scientific Communication Research Centre–UPF (1994–2014), and is a regular columnist for the Spanish edition of The Huffington Post and for Catalan newspaper, ARA.

He was an advisor on Scientific Culture to the European Commission (2002–2010) and was a Barcelona Council member and commissioner for the City of Knowledge (1999–2008).

Vladimir de Semir belongs to several institutions in the field of scientific communication, including: Public Communication of Science and Technology (of which he was President from 2002 and 2006) and Advisory Committee on Professional and Clinical Ethics of the Institute for Research and Development (IRD).

Executive Director
Terribas, who has had a long career in the field of bioethics, has been the head of the Borja Institute of Bioethics at Ramón Llull University for the last fifteen years. She is a legal expert, specializing in the fields of bioethics and biolaw. She is a member of and a legal advisor to a number of ethics committees at health institutions across Spain, and is also a member of the Bioethics Committee of Catalonia and the National Bioethics Committee of Andorra.
 
 
In addition, she has authored numerous articles and book chapters on bioethics and law, and has spoken at a number of bioethics events both in Spain and internationally since 1992.

Maria holds a journalism degree, with a specialization in business communications. She has pursued a career in the pharmaceutical and health sectors, where her previous employers include Sandoz and the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu.

In 2008 she joined the communications department of Grifols, and started working with the Foundation on communication projects, events organization and publications. Since 2013 she has been the Foundation's project coordinator.

Silvia has extensive experience of administrative management in the field of bioethics. For over 20 years she was Secretarial Manager at the Borja Institute of Bioethics (Ramon Llull University), where her duties included organizing training activities, workshops and conferences, supervising the publishing program, maintaining the accounts, and monitoring budgets. In June 2015 she joined the team of the Foundation as Secretarial and Administrative Manager. She is also responsible for coordinating training activities for health professionals, and for events logistics.
