Disability and ethical challenges

More than 30 experts debated the ethical challenges raised by the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities.

On 3 July a group of professionals from the spheres of ethics, the legal system, the care services and the foundations sponsoring the event, together with people with disabilities, discussed the impact of the United Nations Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities, both in legal terms and in the context of care.

The convention defines people with disabilities as the holders of rights, not as the mere recipients of treatment and of social protection. This paradigm shift has a dramatic affect on the whole sector that is responsible for caring for these people, and will require major legislative changes to the Spanish system. The repercussions were analyzed by three discussion panels, focusing on legal aspects, care issues and the experiences of those affected, respectively.

The event was coordinated by Josep Ramos, psychiatrist and expert in the Planning of Mental Health Services at the Parc Sanitari, Sant Joan de Déu.
