The Víctor Grífols i Lucas Foundation organized a discussion day attended by professionals from the worlds of journalism and communication.

The Foundation workshop "Maleficence in prevention programmes" was attended by forty public health professionals from institutions and public bodies across Spain

The Víctor Grífols i Lucas Foundation yesterday organized a workshop in "Maleficence in prevention programmes," attended by forty public health professionals from institutions and public bodies across Spain.
As Mateu Huguet, director of the Institute for Health Studies of the Government of Catalonia, explained, "the ethical aspect of public health is still relatively neglected, and that is why courses such as this are so innovative." Huguet went on to say that he was keen to collaborate with the Foundation in organizing annual activities to address these issues.
The workshop was designed to address ethical aspects of secondary breast cancer prevention programmes which use biannual breast scans to screen populations of apparently health women aged between 50 and 74. Although this initiative has reduced mortality in the target population, many individuals receive no direct benefit and some of them suffer adverse effects. These programmes and the information provided to those taking part in them were analysed from an ethical perspective.
Foundation collaborates with Bioethics Committee of Catalonia to produce publication

The Foundation has collaborated with the Bioethics Committee of Catalonia to publish the manual Recomendaciones a los profesionales sanitarios para la atención a los enfermos al final de la vida. [Advice to health professionals caring for patients at the end of their lives] The document is designed to help professionals caring for patients who are near the end of their lives, whatever the discipline or specialism.
The handbook has not been designed as a theoretical treatise or a technical protocol, but rather is intended to be a useful document which will help understand the values which should underpin care for those who are dying. The issues it considers include basical clinical decisions, providing assistance in different care settings, and clarifying some of the confusions regarding ethical and legal issues.
The book has been published in Spanish and Catalan, and can be downloaded in PDF format.

Generic title
Research Involving Human Participants: What are the ethical issues today confronting researchers and research ethics committees?
Lecture 1 (the general lecture):
Unresolved problems in the design and review of research proposals; newer ethical issues raised by advances in medical science and technology
Specialized Lectures:
Multinational Research: Exploitation or benefit in low-resource countries?
For the past decade, bioethics has been exploring concerns that arise when industrialized countries or the pharmaceutical industry conduct clinical trials in developing countries. Is it acceptable to do research with human participants in these countries when the same research could not ethically be conducted in developed countries?
Grey Areas in Research with Human Participants: Determining what is research, what is novel treatment, what is standard of care?
It is sometimes difficult to determine when an activity is research and when it is aimed at improving the quality of care in a hospital setting or when it should be viewed as public health practice rather than public health research. When physicians embark on novel treatments, are the conducting research? Or deviating from the "standard of care"?
This well known health consultant, James Rice, compares management models in the public and private sectors

On July 2, James Rice, president of Integrated Healthcare Strategies, gave a conference at the Víctor Grífols i Lucas Foundation on ethics in health management models. His speech dealt with different health management companies from the public and private sectors in Catalonia. Also in attendance was Basque Country health minister, Rafael Bengoa.
James Rice organized a practical and interactive session in which he talked about his experiences in the health sector. In his career, he has worked in more than 30 countries in public administration, universities and even private companies.
According to this expert, "no matter which country you examine, people will always be dissatisfied with their health system". According to Rice, it is impossible to establish a clear separation between public and private models because many variations of mixed models coexist. He gave the example of Spain, where each province has its own separate health management model. Throughout his speech, Rice gave various examples to address ethical questions which arise in managing resources and services, and those in attendance participated. The Foundation will publish a synopsis of the conference shortly.
The book offers an in-depth exploration of nursing ethics content.

Edited by Anne Davis, Verena Tschudin and Louis de Raeve, the book also includes the collaboration of several nursing experts. It addresses cross-cultural issues in using specific ethics content. It also reveals the poverty of the present dualism model in nursing ethics and replace this with a more complex and more useful model that invites debate. Its scope is both wide and deep but that is needed to enrich the basis for teaching nursing ethics.
