Loneliness, ageing and the end of life

June 28, 2019

On 28 June, the Foundation hold the Egozcue Lectures, an annual lecture cycle dedicated to a topical issue in bioethics. This year's subject was "Loneliness, ageing and the end of life".

The demographic changes resulting from increased life expectancy and low birth rates have led to rapid ageing of the population as a whole, along with a rise in chronic illness and high levels of dependency. Elderly people in big cities often find themselves struggling with anonymity and loneliness. We have debated these issues with a range of experts, and we had also find out about some of the initiatives under way to address this problema.
