"Is it utopian to imagine a world that is not dystopian?"

Institut Vila de Gràcia school in Barcelona

In this interdisciplinary project, 3rd-year ESO students examine humanity’s possible futures through three classic science fiction themes: artificial intelligence, totalitarianism, and genetic manipulation. Through debates, film analysis, research activities, and the study of bioethical principles, students learn to assess the social and technological risks that can lead to dystopian societies, while developing critical thinking, skills for cooperation and civic awareness. By integrating various curriculum subjects, the project encourages a broad perspective on the interplay between science, ethics, and society.

The project concludes with the “Utopian Nations Summit,” where students present and argue for legislative proposals to help avoid dystopian futures, translating their learning into practical policy initiatives. Combined with involvement in external debates and the production of reports and creative work, this activity has significantly influenced student understanding of science in society. With the prize money, the project can be reinforced and extended, integrating new materials and social activism initiatives.
