The Ecology of Wildfires

Talk given by Marc Castellnou on 22 April, 6:30 p.m.

Extreme wildfires are fuelled by changing landscapes and climate change. The scale of these fires exceeds our ability to control them, creating serious challenges for both civil protection and biodiversity. Treating them simply as emergencies is not working and is fuelling the extinction paradox. This paradox causes wildfires to interact more strongly with the atmosphere and, through pyroconvection, they grow increasingly intense. Nevertheless, these fires also play a role in the adaptation of ecosystems to the new climate. We have seen some positive results when we accept and properly manage this phenomenon. How can government policies be adapted to deal with this issue?

On 22 April at 6:30 p.m., Marc Castellnou, fire brigade inspector and head of the GRAF (Forest Operations Support Group) in Catalonia will offer a talk about these issues at the offices of Amics per a la UNESCO. This activity is part of the Espacios de Reflexión (Spaces for Thought) lecture series, offered in partnership with the UNESCO organisation.
