"Let us remember” (Hacemos Memoria)

Escola Els Pins school in Castelldefels

Through an intergenerational programme with the Uszheimer Foundation of Castelldefels, the project engages first-grade students in exploring science and ethics. Starting with “How can we help an older person improve their memory?”, students investigate the workings of the brain and memory, consider the passage of time, and reflect on ageing and the dignity of older adults. Guided by fifth-grade students and through practical activities such as the construction of a brain model or participation in a nervous system treasure hunt, children learn that science also involves care and responsibility.

In this project, scientific learning is integrated with community service through workshops with people living with Alzheimer’s, the design of a 3D-printed memory game, and personalised key chains as tokens of connection. Through these emotional and educational experiences, students develop empathy, solidarity, and intergenerational respect, alongside critical thinking and creativity. The project concludes with a community event at the municipal library, showcasing students’ work and learning, and emphasis is placed on the understanding that “doing” science also means caring for and enhancing the lives of others.
