How does bioethics work? Methodology, deliberation and citizenship

29 January

On the 29th of January at 6 p.m. we are hosting a round table discussion on the pedagogy of bioethics, coinciding with the release of the latest issue of the journal Argumenta Philosophica dedicated to this subject.

Bioethics has become a cornerstone discipline within the realm of contemporary knowledge. No longer confined to the field of ethics or applied ethics, many have proposed that it be a part of civics, serving as a key element in democratic education. This is due to the interdisciplinary nature of bioethics, which entails the adept management of diverse knowledge, the ability to pose evaluative questions and delve into the challenging realm of beliefs, attitudes, and emotions to ensure sound decision-making.

Deliberation lies at the core of bioethical action. But what is “deliberation”? Is it reaching a consensus? Negotiation? Coming to an agreement? It is not any of these things; instead, it is a methodology that, drawing upon ancient wisdom (Aristotle), extends into today’s most contentious subjects to articulate a plurality of values. Seen in this light, Bioethics is a call to critical and responsible citizenship. How can we elevate bioethics, ethics and critical practice, in order to address the challenges of today?
