On 25 June, 2021, Spain’s Organic Law 3/2021 on the Regulation of Euthanasia (LORE) came into force, making Spain the fourth European country to decriminalise both euthanasia and assisted suicide. As we approach the four-year anniversary of its coming into effect, we take this opportunity to reflect on its implementation and assess the progress made.
The management of requests for assisted dying in each Autonomous Community, the role of the Commissions of Guarantees (committees that assess each case), the challenges faced by professionals, the interpretation of the law, and judicial involvement all present significant issues. It is also a highly sensitive indicator of the growing impact of economic crises, epidemics, climate change, and social inequalities.
