The rise of medicalization in daily life: the pros and cons
6 July
Course organized in conjunction with the Cuimpb on the rise of medicalization in daily life. Driven by evolving social dynamics and the expectations of individuals, this phenomenon has the potential to turn natural life experiences such as grief and personal dissatisfaction into pathologies. As life expectancy increases and greater demands are placed on healthcare and social support, we are confronted with the task of effectively prioritizing quality of life at every stage of care. It is crucial that we reassess the goals of our healthcare system and broaden our focus to include fields such as disease prevention as well as the alleviation of pain and suffering.
This underscores the importance of ethical, social and legal discussion concerning the application of biomedical advancements, as well as the need for people-centred care and the promotion of behavioural changes that impact individuals’ well-being. In an effort to actively contribute to the discussion in this regard, we have organized this free course on the topic, extending a sincere invitation to all those who are interested in taking part in this activity. The goal here is to promote a vision of medicine that goes beyond the mere treatment of illness and the extension of life, prioritizing quality of life and compassionate support throughout the dying process.
