Vaccines and globalization

9 November

On 9 November the conference cycle organized in collaboration with the Amics UNESCO de Barcelona (Friends of the UNESCO, Barcelona) continues. For this instalment, Andreu Segura, coordinator of the Ethics and Public Health Working Group (SESPAS), will give a lecture on the timely topic of vaccination.

Vaccination is a subject that has generated much controversy. The Covid-19 pandemic has made this patently clear, with vaccination becoming a matter of public health due to the greater importance placed on collaboration among citizens in order to guarantee the effectiveness of the vaccine. With this in mind, the success of vaccination does not depend exclusively on vaccines, it is also essential to have appropriate health and social infrastructure that will reinforce people’s trust in these actions.

In this era of globalization, the possible effects of an epidemiological crisis are magnified, forcing us to learn from the errors committed in the management of the pandemic, the most recent example of a globalized phenomenon. However, this compels us to reflect on whether vaccines are a solution to the problem or an instrument, and the extent of our responsibility as a society.

In this talk, Andreu Segura will discuss the origin of vaccines and their evolution, putting into context some of their virtues and shortcomings through the analysis of the most salient ethical issues surrounding them.
