Social robotics: ethical and social aspects
Welcome to a new cycle of lectures organized with Barcelona Friends of UNESCO to discuss bioethical issues. The first event is a lecture on the issue of social robotics with Miquel Domènech, professor of social psychology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).
Technological development over recent years has brought about scenarios that only a few years ago would have seemed like something from science fiction. How have we gone from industrial robotics to the use of social robots in hospitals, households and care settings? What does this change of paradigm mean? Technological innovation entails a new way of understanding the world, one that poses new ethical problems and challenges.
Miquel Domènech has received one of our grants to support his research into the ethical considerations to take into account in the design and use of social robots in children's hospitals. He is a member of the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST) and of the Barcelona Science and Technology Studies Group (STS-b) at UAB.
