Mental health in young people and adolescents

25 October

Many mental health issues first appear before the age of 26. In fact, half of mental disorders begin before the age of 14. Marta Pardo, psychiatrist at the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, will speak on 18 October as part of the Lecture organised by the Foundation in conjunction with Amics de la Unesco Barcelona.

She will explain how adolescence, a phase marked by brain maturation, is simultaneously a period of vulnerability, susceptible to risk factors such as traumas, adverse events, sustained stress, and drug use. These factors can detrimentally affect this developmental process and contribute to the onset of pathologies or mental health problems.

The COVID-19 health crisis has undoubtedly been a major contributing factor to the decline in global mental health. Its impact has been particularly pronounced among children and adolescents, leading to a 50.9% increase in the demand for mental health assistance in 2021.

For this reason, it is necessary to focus on building resilience, designing preventive measures, and actively promoting emotional well-being among the adolescent population. These efforts are essential to equip them with the necessary tools to face any challenges that come their way.
