Sex and gender: transsexuality as a reality

October 5

On 5 October, the lecture cycle we organize with Barcelona Friends of UNESCO resumes. Sabel Gabaldón, psychiatrist and doctor of philosophy, will give a talk entitled "Sex and gender: transsexuality as a reality".

The development of gender identity is a complex, dynamic and multi-factored process, which involves several variables. In minors, we need to think of experiences regarding gender as positions that are constantly evolving. Development in childhood and adolescence is not linear, awareness of transsexuality is not acquired at a given age, not does every transgression of gender norms in childhood or adolescence imply an adult life as a trans person.

In trans people there is a link between their feelings of discomfort and the social rejection they experience as an attempt to force them to conform to dominant gender norms.  This aspect has not been taken into account in the medical approach, which has maintained pathologizing attitudes through diagnosis. It is essential that we move from a medical model to one based on the rights of the child and the adolescent, in which health professionals assume a role of accompaniment, no longer determining the ways in which identities and expressions of gender, and sexual orientations and practices are understood and experienced.

Sabel Gabaldón offers a depathologizing approach to trans people and to the ethical criteria that need to be incorporated into decision-making in our medical responses.
