Health, democracy and freedom
24 May
Andreu Arenas will examine the behaviour of citizens as they strive to balance individual good and the common good in this upcoming lecture. This talk is part of our lecture series organized in collaboration with Amics Unesco de Barcelona (Friends of the UNESCO, Barcelona).
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, policies were implemented that required us to choose between our health, individual freedom, or economic prosperity. However, it seemed impossible for any one policy to fully address all three concerns at the same time. What were the experiences of citizens in navigating these trade-offs? Which aspects would we most likely sacrifice in an emergency and why?
Andreu Arenas is a Lecturer in Economics at the University of Barcelona. He received his PhD in Economics from the European University Institute and has conducted research at Princeton University and the University of Leuven. Although his primary research interest is in political economy, he also conducts research in the fields of economics of education and social mobility
